Edition XIV. A solid violet with a glowing crimson rim, the 14th Equinox pops with aromas of wild blackberry on a Diablo Wind day, brambly raspberry, ripe black fig with hints of vanilla cream and pain au chocolat. Perceived sweetness on the nose is juxtaposed by a dry yet lush palate of wild strawberry, boysenberry and (again) raspberry with a touch of allspice. The acidity holds through the finish with some soft oak tannin à la English breakfast tea — ‘yes ’ on the cream and sugar.

Blend: 99% Zinfandel and 1% Petite Sirah

Edition XV. An almost-black ink core with a neon brick rim sits in the glass. Powerful aromatics come from the glass: reduced strawberry, compote de cassis, blackened red peppers and a hint of chapparal and fresh split oak. The palate is equally forceful yet balanced with notes of brambly raspberry, ripe red plum, kirsch and a touch of black licorice. Rich and full bodied throughout, the wine closes with ripe tannins a la dark baking chocolate and sweet black tea.

DAWNG

Edition XVI. A true expression of the Petite Sirah grape, the wine shows off a black ink core with a rich crimson rim. On the nose, a floral and expressive set of aromas flow from the glass: ultraripe blue plum, open-hearth charred duck, sweet oak, a slight funk and the spray from opening a juicy Cara Cara orange. The palate taps into another dimension: massive, relentless, shocking, girthy, sinister, truly unique. Notes of sweet blueberry pie, braised beef stew and Vietnamese coffee transport you to 2pm under the sweltering Death Valley sun encased in an imploding black hole of tannin. Enjoy now to experience the varietal in its young beastly state or give it a few years to mellow and mature.

It Takes A Village

Edition XVII. An intense resonance of deep purple, Equinox 17 opens with focused aromatics of black plum, clove, cedar, leather, coriander and a touch of minerality. Multi-dimensional and layered on the entry and throughout, the palate is youthful with a spirit of adventure and timeless energy. Prominent notes of blackberry, black plum (again!), currant, star anise and hoisin. A page turner, the finish culminates cyclically with elegance, length and a waxy, encased dark chocolate coulant topped with a blackberry compote.

Edition XVIII. A garnet core with a ruby gemstone rim, the Equinox Edition XVIII opens with aromatic notes of bright cranberry, strawberry, pluot and an intriguing touch of endive, crème fraîche and fennel. Fresh, alive, and enveloping just scratch the surface of the palate; a developing mid-palate of black cherry, wild raspberry, orange peel and pomegranate — all with a prominent vein of acidity — dominate. Bright through the finish, the wine closes with a slight tart cherry upon a piquant, endless crescendo.

100% Pinot Noir from the Our Lady of Guadalupe Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and the Annapolis Ridge Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast.

Purgatory

Edition XIX. An opaque purple core with a glowing crimson rim, Equinox 19 in the glass simply turns heads. Opening aromatics of opulent plum, Mendocino forest floor, boysenberry jam, sage, redwood, dark chocolate and baking spices declare themselves. Sublime and polished on entry, the palate expresses notes of blackberry, duck confit with a touch of orange, rosemary and gorgeous lamb tagine. The tannins provide a balanced texture, leading to a finish of ripe pluot, raspberry and a hint of char.
